Wells-Next-The-Sea
Norfolk
Wells-Next-The-Sea is known for being a tourist hot-spot on the North Norfolk coast. A pretty harbour town, with narrow lanes of cottages and a sandy beach with rows of beach huts looking out to see. For those that have lived here in centuries past however, it has been the scene of tragedy and scandal in equal measure. This is one of our darker tours in our Guidl series and we visit several graves and re-tell several local murders!

Visiting Wells out of season is much quieter and a little more civilized than mid-summer and it makes a great destination for a winter break. Whenever you chose to visit though, be sure to explore the rest of the town as there is much more to see that what we covered in our walk. The cemetery that you pass between points seven and eight has a great number of war graves in, which could be a whole afternoon if you want to stop at them all. For those that like railway heritage, one of the the old railway station buildings is now a bookshop on Polka Road. On the outskirts of town the Wells and Walsingham Light Railway allows you to enjoy the route of the old Great Eastern line on a narrow gauge line as far as Walsingham. You can visit their website HERE. I also recommend a visit to the Wells Maltings theatre and cafe, where a free to visit heritage centre has lots of interactive displays to enjoy. You can explore their website HERE.
The resources used for this tour are as follows and offer a lot more information about the stories I've mentioned. :
