Helpston,
Northamptonshire

St Botolphs Church.jpg

Helpston is a small pretty village that once sat in the Soke of Peterborough. It is one of the many villages that changed county in the 1974 local authority reforms. Today it is in Cambridgeshire, but for the majority of it's existence was in Northamptonshire. John Clare is one of Northamptonshire's most celebrated sons. This very short walk, followed by a brief stop in a neighbouring village, introduces us to his tragic life and the circumstances that led to some of the best poetry to come out of the 19th century.
